Daydream – Tagtraum

Daydream is an interactive sound installation that reimagines our relationship with technology, shifting it from conflictual and cognitive to intimate and sensorial. At its core, the piece combines a spring-mass system, a motion sensor, and a speaker to create a dynamic and self-expressive entity. As it sways, it generates an evolving soundscape, delicate, hypnotic, and alive, inviting contemplation and playful interaction.

The installation’s motion sensor detects acceleration and rotation in three dimensions, using this data to trigger or modulate sound in real time. The sound design blends pre-recorded samples with real-time synthesis: bird-like chirps emerge organically from synthesis, while the sound of water (a short static loop) becomes fluid and unpredictable as it is continuously modulated by the movement. This interplay between organic motion and digital sound gives the installation a natural, ever-changing quality. With low latency between motion and sound, Daydream heightens the connection between vision and audition, deepening the sense of presence. Every subtle movement leaves an imprint on the soundscape, making interaction essential: without motion, the installation remains silent. A single push sets it in motion, creating a self-sustaining audiovisual experience that gradually fades but lingers, allowing for moments of passive observation as well as active engagement. The metaphor of a mass-spring system captures nature’s unpredictable yet governed behavior, paralleling our past power struggles with technology and nature. Daydream advocates for a renewed, intimate dialogue with both, emphasizing sensory and reciprocal engagement over quest for domination.

Exhibited in 2023 at Errant Sound Gallery, and in 2024 at MiniBooth.
